Policies
• Inclusion-, Equality - & Diversity Policy
We aim to foster an inclusive and equitable industry where everyone can express their creativity, feel secure, and perform their best work. Our goal is to make storytelling and casting choices that reflect society as it truly is and to challenge harmful stereotypes, including those that are racist, homophobic, transphobic, or sexist. Nonetheless, we acknowledge the significant challenges the media industry faces. The societal structures that lead to discrimination and exclusion, such as sexism and racism, also impact our productions and workplaces. As a leading company in the industry, we have a duty to actively combat these structures. This involves thoroughly analyzing the impact of our production decisions, acting on our insights, and advising our clients accordingly.
What does this mean for you, our collaborators and employees?
Everyone involved in our productions, regardless of their role, represents New Land and upholds its cultural values. It is crucial for us all to embody these principles and contribute to a safe and inclusive environment, recognizing that we shape each other’s working conditions. Leaders, in particular, have a special responsibility to ensure equal participation opportunities for everyone.
How might discrimination, harassment, and exclusion appear in our industry?
It could be through an inappropriate comment about someone's appearance, an unwelcome sexual advance, or the assumption that some individuals are inherently competent while others must continually prove themselves. It can also manifest in the exclusion of individuals from the industry based on their identity rather than their abilities. Therefore, we expect the highest level of professionalism from our team members. No one should endure harassment, discrimination, or exclusion. If anyone experiences such issues, we urge you to reach out to management. We are committed to listening and taking action.
• Working environment and on-set
When you work with us, you represent and uphold the culture of AKKURAT. It’s important to treat everyone involved in our productions—clients, freelancers, extras, or interns—with kindness and respect. We encourage everyone to foster an inclusive and respectful environment, creating a friendly and creative workplace where everyone can perform at their best. Mistakes may occur, but they can usually be resolved positively with mutual support. AKKURAT's productions and workplaces must be entirely free from harassment based on gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, origin, or any other form of abuse. If you observe any violations of this policy, please report them to the Production Management.
Recording Policy
Safety and Conduct: Running on set is prohibited as it can increase stress and risk of injury. Shouting is only allowed in emergencies. Keep your belongings organized and ensure aisles and escape routes are clear. Follow instructions from production, location, and stunt/sfx managers. Prioritize everyone’s safety and speak up if you notice any risks or dangers on set.
Traffic Policy
Adherence to Traffic Rules: Always comply with traffic regulations. Ensure you have a valid driving license for the type of vehicle you are operating. Drive carefully and avoid driving when tired. Plan your work to prevent driving under stress, and respect company rules to ensure everyone gets adequate rest. This also applies to driving within the workplace; tasks such as picking up/dropping off actors, props, or equipment should be done during working hours and should not interfere with rest periods. If you notice any scheduling issues that could compromise this policy, notify production management immediately for resolution.
Alcohol and Drug Policy
Zero Tolerance: Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited on location, including working while hungover. Employees found under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be immediately suspended. If you observe someone under the influence, report it to production management promptly. Production management will then ensure the affected person is appropriately taken care of.
• Green Production Policy At AKKURAT, we strive to be as environmentally conscious as possible, understanding the impact of our actions. Together, we can make more sustainable choices during production. Below is a guide on how we work to reduce each production's environmental impact, along with some rules to follow when working on an AKKURAT production:
PRE-PRODUCTION
Local Filming: We aim to develop scripts that can be shot locally to avoid air travel emissions and, where possible, script locations and props to promote sustainable behaviors (e.g., characters using reusable cups and cutlery). Local Talent: We prioritize using local cast and crew to minimize travel requirements.
OFFICE
Renewable Energy: Whenever possible, our offices are heated with renewable energy. Recycling: We have bins for metal, glass, paper, and plastic. Data Storage: Store long-term or infrequently accessed data on LTO tape to reduce carbon emissions from cloud servers and hard drives. Energy Conservation: Turn off lights and electrical items when not in use and avoid unnecessary charging.
COMMUNICATION & PRESENTATION
Digital Documents: We don't print PPM presentations or call sheets except in exceptional cases. Important documents are provided digitally in advance. Digital Workflow: We use online systems like Dropbox, Wiredrive, and Monday on a job-by-job basis. Digital Invoicing: All invoicing is processed digitally. Please avoid sending paper invoices.
PRODUCTION
Reusable Bags: AKKURAT and Bad Land provide canvas bags in the office; use these instead of plastic bags. Mindful Purchasing: Before buying anything, consider its post-production use. Can it be reused, rehomed, or recycled? Recycling: Recycle used disposable batteries, broken hard drives, and other small electronics. Resource Guide: For more advice on sustainable production practices, visit AdGreen Resources Guide.
TRANSPORT AND TRAVEL
Sustainable Transport: Use bikes, trains, or electric vehicles whenever possible. Carpooling: When driving to set, fill vehicles with others attending that day to reduce the number of cars and vans in use. Discourage engine idling. Avoid Flying: Don’t fly unless essential. If flying is necessary, budget for CO2 neutralization/compensation. Remote Work: Use digital tools for remote work. AKKURAT provides software for online meetings.
ON SET AND TECHNICAL DEPARTMENTS
Generator Use: Minimize generator use and procure renewable fuel sources like bio-diesel. Track fuel usage. Studio Energy: Use studios powered by renewable energy or help them transition to renewable sources. Energy Efficiency: Use grid power or rechargeable batteries for lights, DIT equipment, vans, and camera cars. Turn off lights and equipment when not in use. Eco-Friendly Materials: Use reusable location protection, reduce energy needs with LED lighting, and source eco-friendly consumables.
CRAFT, FOOD, AND PACKAGING
Vegetarian Options: Consider providing vegetarian-only food on set to reduce our carbon footprint. Source food seasonally and sustainably. Reduce Plastic: Use reusable water bottles and biodegradable containers for catering. Food Donations: Arrange to donate leftover food to local charities or shelters.
SET DESIGN
Renting and Reusing: Rent equipment and props where possible. Use sustainably sourced and reusable materials for set decoration. Efficient Transport: Transport equipment and props sustainably. Safe Disposal: Dispose of solvents legally and carefully.
WARDROBE
Sustainable Choices: Hire rather than buy robes and towels. Avoid fast fashion and use sustainable brands. Shop secondhand where possible. Return and Recycle: Return items after use or recycle/rehome them. Use ecological detergents and soaps.
WASTE
Waste Management: Organize waste collection for recycling and food waste. Remind cast and crew to separate waste properly. Thank you for helping us improve!
